The Communist Manifesto

The Communist Manifesto is less a book than a detonation. Written by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels amid the political upheavals of 1848, it announced the arrival of a new force in history and sought to rally the workers of the world into revolutionary action. From its opening image of a specter haunting Europe to its closing demand for international solidarity, the text presses forward with unrelenting momentum.

At its core is the argument that history is defined by class struggle — lords against serfs, masters against journeymen, bourgeois against proletarians. The manifesto indicts capitalism for uprooting tradition, reducing human life to market transactions, and concentrating wealth in fewer hands. Marx and Engels document how workers were stripped of independence, bound to wages, and ground down by the machinery of industry.

Their proposals remain provocative. They called for progressive taxation, centralized credit, state-led industry, abolition of private property in land, and more — laid out concretely in Marx’s 10 planks, reproduced in this edition. These demands were not offered as utopian ideals but as logical outcomes of capitalism’s contradictions, meant to prepare the ground for revolution.

This volume also features an Introduction by William P. Fall, who situates the manifesto in its 19th-century context and traces its influence through revolutions, political movements, and ideological battles of the modern world.
